The ROC of Embrun

 

A picturesque rock; a classified and protected plain!

Embrun was built on a steep cliff called “le Roc”, this Roc is cut steeply on the valley side and the town overlooks the right bank of the Durance from a height of 80m. On the valley side there is a vast alluvial plain. This dominance gives Embrun a pitoresque and delicate aspect.

The city of Embrun is perched on its rock, 80m of « poudingue » cliff stone overlooking the Durance which has enabled it to control for many centuries the trade flows on the Durancien axis.

Pedestrian pathways with gardens, viewpoint indicators and a footbridge are all present for you to enjoy the panorama.

The ROC Plain

The Roc plain, a peaceful place ideal for walks or jogging, located between the Durance and the foot of the Roc, is made up of vegetable gardens, cultivated fields or pastures irrigated by numerous canals. The site was classified as a historical monument in 1978 and in 2000, was classified « Natura 2000 » so is thus protected, the panorama is preserved and as you drive on the Embrun deviation you can admire the legendary view and in particular the bell tower of the ND du Réal Cathedral which emerges, erected on the Roc.
