LE MONT GUILLAUME

LE MONT GUILLAUME

The Embrun communal forest which is the Mont Guillaume is one of the most beautiful larch tree forests in the Hautes-Alpes. Larches are light, airy, luminous wood trees, which contrast with the dark and a little stifling atmosphere of certain coniferous forests ... with larch trees however, the light penetrates well through the branches and foliage and the vegetation is often abundant underneath.

Its different uses coexist sustainably: land protection, production of timber for construction or heating, animal grazing, walks, hikes and picnics…..

These beautiful mountain pastures that stretch upwards towards the summit are dotted with herds of cattle and sheep. With a combination of grass, clear larch forest beads, rocks , water and flower carpet, a harmonious and charming landscape is created.

Mont Guillaume is part of the natural and cultural heritage of Embrun. This mythical summit, which can be reached by taking the Widman trail, has some wonderful surprises in store: the stone chapels dedicated to Saint-Guillaume (there are two - one at 2,074m and the other at 2,542m), the Widman nameplate and a breathtaking view of the Serre-Ponçon lake.

Halfway along the path to the summit, the Séyères chapel, located at 2,074 meters owes its notoriety to the Saint-Guillaume pilgrimage. On the second Sunday of July, pilgrims and priors walk up to the summit chapel (2542 m) where the parish priest of Embrun gives a blessing. They then descend to the chapel of Séyères where mass is celebrated, followed by an afternoon of sharing and fellowship.

The Brotherhood of the Priors of Mont Guillaume.

These preachers, a brotherhood of lay men who are committed to upholding and maintaining the good condition of chapels, huts and crosses all along the trial to the summit, work endlessly to bring tradition and prayer to life.
