Cultural life & history

A city of character with exceptional history and heritage.

Embrun is an ancient archiepiscopal city, built on an 80m « poudingue » rock, it has a remarkable architectural heritage.

Embrun is certified  “ A town and country of Art and History”, a city on a human scale which is easy to visit.

Accompanied by an acredited guide or when simply on an adventure, the main thing is to look up: modillions and masks personalize the facades; battlements 27m high battlements are seen on the Tour Brune and corner pyramids adorn the bell tower.

Everything is subject to wonder. Over time, from the Roman conquest to the present day, history has shaped the face of this town, the real jewel is of course the 12th century Notre-Dame du Réal Cathedral.

Opposite the Cathedral’s lions porch, there is  the Maison des Chanonges, (Maison du Patrimoine Embrunais, heritage center), headquarters to all "Cultural Events", exhibitions, talks, screenings, etc.

The "Les Capucins" Contemporary Art Center offers a program, at a rate of four or five exhibitions per year, each one accompanied by artistic events.

Concerts, Art exhibitions, Organ Hour (at the Cathedral), Theater, Street Festival "for families", Open dance stages, abound throughout the year with a denser schedule in the summer season.

And also, there is in June, the OutdoorMix Festival: outdoor sports and current music concerts

And in early July the Trad'in Festival: World Music concerts

Embrun also benefits from the activity of 27 cultural associations involved with plastic arts, the theater, music, song, dance ...
